The Africa Adaptation Programme (AAP) is UNDP’s flagship programme for climate change adaptation in Africa, funded by the Government of Japan. AAP is hosting a brownbag lunch event to present one of its key initiatives, the Media Capacity Building South-South Project (MCBP). The project was launched in November 2010, in conjunction with the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation. From its base in Nairobi, MCBP is introducing a thorough knowledge of the climate change debate to African print, broadcast and web-based journalists and other media professionals. This involves not only helping them build their capacities to track this issue as it evolves, but to play their unique and indispensable role in providing a forum for discussion, informing debate with context and analysis, and contributing to public accountability by reporting on progress or the lack of it. To date, 215 journalists from 19 AAP countries have been trained in climate change workshops sponsored by MCBP. MCBP was an important participant for AAP in COP 17 in Durban through AAP’s side event on building and sustaining partnerships and MCBP’s support for 5 young journalists from 5 AAP countries joining the We Have Faith – Act Now for Climate Justice Caravan, which traveled through six African countries to create awareness of climate change through concerts and rallies along the way. MCBP also supported four senior journalists from 4 AAP countries to attend COP 17 and cover it for their respective countries.
