It may be recalled 25 years ago, on 3rd December, 1984 the greatest and worst industrial disaster happened in the Central Indian city of Bhopal when Methyl Isocynate Chemical (MIC) leaked from the pesticide plant of Union Carbide, a US multinational company, located in densely populated settlement killing about 15,000 people and over 500,000 people permanently harmed. Besides, around 8,000 tonnes of toxic waste lying in the premises of the abandoned plant has over the years seeped into groundwater contaminating it with heavy and harmful metals and dangerous pesticides and pollutants. Moreover, many children born to parents directly exposed to the poisonous gas are suffering from brain damage, cleft lips, missing palates, twisted limbs, vision and breathing disorders. The survivors of this devastating gas tragedy, who live in the affected localities have been drinking the contaminated water.

In this background, it becomes important to know how recurrence of such man-made tragedy could be prevented and steps needed to socially and economically rehabilitate the victims so that the tragedy does not trangress to the second generation.

In the current global scenario where man-made disaster are not uncommon, cooperation to address this issue stands out to be fairly relevant. Can we have views, thoughts, suggestions and experience sharing for a positive way forward to deal with such tragic situations. Thanks!
