In July we at the World Bank asked this community what you think about the concept of a global brokering platform for South-South Cooperation. Over 120 people shared their views through an online survey (97) and in-depth interviews (24). All in all, respondents from 44 countries participated. The results are attached here, including a summary of the online responses, a summary analysis of the in-depth interviews, and the interview template for reference.

Additional resources from this study include a summary of the 24 in-depth interview responses by responder type (recipient/ provider) as well as a selection of the open ended responses from the online survey to the question: "How would an ideal brokering platform enable you to boost the involvement of your institution in South-South learning?"

I've been looking at south-south cooperation at a more grass-roots, organization to organization level, and how to do that or facilitate it, so looking at it from a view of country planning is interesting. There are some common themes, however. Data is one, whether setting up a study whose results can be published in a peer reviewed journal or finding an appropriate provider; identifying what is needed and defining it is another (or even recognizing a need), as is the need for clarity about the technical assistance and collaboration between partners. Follow up and the necessity of building long-term relationships is also key. One thing I found interesting was that your survey found little use of resources in academic and nongovernmental organizations, but this is where many countries in Africa are excelling. I would refer you to Southern African AIDS Trust, Pop Council Zambia, and Liverpool VCT, all doing excellent work in south-south. In addition, Swaziland's NERCHA used results based planning for its national strategic framework for HIV AIDS (2009-2014), and is developing its approach in Lesotho, Namibia, and Zambia. Things are moving!
Dear Lisa, many thanks for the references and suggestions. Will definitely follow up on these.
